Clinical Research

Clinical or “bedside” research is based mainly on bedside or clinical observation of the patient, rather than through laboratory work. This type of research often is responsible for the creation of new therapeutics or medications, but may also be dependent on the knowledge gained from basic research. At the Arizona Arthritis Center, the philosophy of “bench to bedside” and often vice-versa, creates the best academic environment for inquiry and teaching of new rheumatology fellows, residents, medical students and other health professionals. Most clinical research is conducted by MD’s or MD/PhD’s, but other academically-trained non-physician professionals also conduct clinical research. This is usually under the mentorship or preceptorship of a more experienced faculty member or physician. A setting of peer review is inherent to all research at the Arizona Arthritis Center.
