Rheumatology is an evolving field.  New therapies are in development and studies delving into the pathogenesis (development) of rheumatic diseases, how to monitor the disease in patients, as well as a number of other critical topics expand the fundamental knowledge base regularly.  As a result, care providers can benefit significantly from continuing education specific to their field.

The Arizona Arthritis Center and the Phoenix Rheumatology Association organized and hosted the 22nd annual CME-accredited Statewide Rheumatology Conference in June 2009.  Held in Sedona, Arizona, more than 100 healthcare professionals, including rheumatologists, nurse practitioners, and physicians assistants from Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Nevada attended the two-day, classroom style CME-accredited conference.

The conference was supported by the generosity of Abbott Immunology, Actelion Pharmaceuticals US, Inc., Amgen / Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Bristol-Meyers Squibb, Centocor, Eli Lilly and Company, Forest Pharmaceuticals, GE Healthcare, Genentech / Biogen Idec, Gilead Sciences, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer, Primus, P&G Pharmaceuticals, Roche, Sonosite, Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, and UCB.  In addition, the University of Arizona College of Medicine at the Arizona Health Sciences Center supported credits for the continuing medical education activity.

Topics included updates in pediatric rheumatology, everyday questions arising when using biologics, practice measure in rheumatology, and periodic fevers and gout, among other fascinating discussions.  Four of the seven scheduled speakers were from the University of Arizona and the Arizona Arthritis Center.
