Miranda K. Adelman, Ph.D. Awarded Grant
Congratulations to Miranda K. Adelman, Ph.D.,
research assistant professor at the Arizona Arthritis Center, who has been awarded
a faculty small grant by the University of Arizona Foundation for her proposal titled “Human monoclonal antibodies to endogenous viruses in SLE.”
Faculty small grants are awarded by the UA Foundation on a competitive basis for projects
involving research or other creative scholarly activity. An investigator may apply for
this award every four years. The program is intended to provide short-term, one-time
support that will jump start worthwhile projects and result in data or work projects
that can be used in developing major proposals for submission to extramural funding
agencies or private contributors.
Dr. Adelman’s groundbreaking work at the AAC focuses on understanding
the processes that lead to the development of autoimmune disease.
Once the pathways that lead to autoimmune disease are identified,
specific treatments that block these pathways may be developed.

The Week Flew By
More than 35 guests reluctantly left Canyon Ranch on October 30 wishing for one more day
in paradise. Participants spent seven days experiencing tasty, healthy meals; hearing the
latest information on exercise, nutrition, and arthritis therapies/treatments; and
receiving one-on-one health consultations and pampering services such as specialized
massages. Feeling renewed and refreshed after an exhilarating week among nurturing
professionals in breathtaking surroundings, participants took with them important
knowledge on how to live well with arthritis.
Thriving with Arthritis Week at world-renowned Canyon Ranch sold out quickly with
a fairly long waiting list this year. The next event is scheduled for October 22 through 29, 2006.
Rheumatologists from the Center will again lecture and consult with guests during this
potentially life-altering week for participants.
For more information or to make a reservation,
call 1-800-742-9000 or visit canyonranch.com/arthritis.

Appointments Announced
The Arizona Arthritis Center is pleased to report the appointments of two researchers.
Miranda K. Adelman, Ph.D.
and Shelley Kasle, Ph.D.,
have both been appointed to research assistant professor positions.
Dr. Adelman, previously a postdoctoral research associate at the Center, is conducting
an important study to better understand the pathways leading to autoimmune
disease. Her groundbreaking work at the Center is focused on human
endogenous retroviruses. Dr. Adelman wants to find out what role
these retroviruses play in autoimmune disease. In addition to learning
a great deal about immunology in general, it is possible that this research
could lead to effective therapies that block the causes of immune disease,
and study results could also have important implications for better
treatment and prevention of HIV. Dr. Adelman assumed her appointment
on July 1, 2005.
Dr. Kasle, previously a Center senior program coordinator, is the principal investigator
of the Couples and Arthritis Study, which
focuses on “mutuality” as a potential factor influencing
the health of rheumatoid arthritis patients. Dr. Kasle measures mutuality
as participants’ ratings of how often they and their partners
react with interest, empathy and openness when they talk about things
that are important to them. These studies are expected to increase understanding
of “active ingredients” in good relationships. This information
can be used in the development of social support interventions to improve
outcomes for people living with chronic disease. Dr. Kasle assumed her
appointment on January 11, 2005.
